Civil War :: essays research papers
The civil state of contend drastically altered American history. It would be difficult to findanyone who would disagree with the above statement. But, did the civil war affect thelives of southern women as drastically? In my opinion, it did. Many people fail to body forththat the outbreak of the civil war changed the lives of all Southern women - not justslaves. The women of the Confederacy, black and white, rich and poor, would see theirlives changed forever as a result of the war that ensued between the North and the Southduring the years of 1861 to 1865. The fact is, that even though men were doing thefighting, the women were confront with the more intimidating aspects of the war - newchallenges, depravations, unforeseen dangers, and or so importantly the uncertainty oftheir futures. The war required complete mobilization of resources and with three out offour men away at war1, there were many gaps for Southern women to fill. (Our Needles.)The affects of war were widespread and varied by age, location, and marital status, but the clearest and most significant delineations were by class and race. As is the casewith most national crisiss, the war seemed to have an almost leveling affect on socialstatus - everyone shared a common hardship and suffering. The truth is though thatwomen who owned slaves faced much harsher realities of war than those who did not. Forslaveholding women, the civil war represented an evil that was slowly diminishing theirprivileges and affluence, and one that would eventually reshape their entire socialidentities. eon the war disrupted the economy, as is normal, the bigger issue at hand wasits attack on slavery. This was most crucial, because the deterioration of a slave labor arranging was synonymous with the deterioration of wealth for many southern families.

Data Link Control (internet) :: essays research papers
Society has become based solely on the ability to move large amounts of information across vast distances quickly. The lifelike evolution of computers and this need for ultra-fast communications has caused a global network of interconnected computers to develop. This global network tout ensembleows a person to send E-mail across the terra firma in mere fractions of a second, and enables even the common person to access information world-wide. With the new advancements in technology there must be a set of rules or better known as protocols that must be established and utilized at all whiles. In this short ten rogue paper I will be demonstrating the advancements in these protocols and there uses right away.To properly show the significant advancement, it will be best to show why info Link Control was established. In the early 1970s, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) started a research program interlinking computer to share information. charm sending in formation from one site to the other many problems arose with loosing data (Society). To decrease the amount of corrupted data being transmitted, protocols were established. These protocols were a drawn away process that was very slow but was able to transfer data all across the world. By 1986, the US National Science Foundation Started the NSFNET which today provides one of the biggest backbones for the internet. This supercomputer was able to send packets on its 45 MBps trunk to different locations. Once this was in place the internet was born with transmission control protocol/IP Protocols of TCP/IP protocol suite became available in the 1980s. . By 1991-93 Home computers were starting to take advantage of the vast amount of information that is available. By this time the OSI protocol was created and by the end of 1991 the internet has grown to include 5,000 networks in three countries, serving over 700,000 host computers used by over 4,000,000 people. This was all possible due to strict sets of protocols that were followed (Society). By the mid to late 1990s society was using 56K modems in the residential areas and companies were purchasing faster dedicated connections. At this period of time head for the hills control, error control, and High-level Data link Control (HDLC) were being implemented. The control of the data being processed is referred to as flow control. Flow control was needed to be established to regulate the speed of data being transmitted. Regulating the speed of the transmission evens out the data so that very little errors will occur.

AI vs Frankenstein :: essays research papers
Movie Artificial IntelligenceSynopsisIn the not-so-far future the paired ice caps have melted and the resulting rise of ocean waters has drowned all the coastal cities of the world. Withdrawn to the interior of the continents, the human race keeps advancing, reaching to the point of creating graphic robots-called mechas-to serve them. An ambitious Professor succeeds in building David, an artificial kid, the first of its kind programmed to earmark endless love for its adopter. David is adopted by Monica as a substitute for her real son, but an unfortunate sequence of events leads Monica to abandon David. Believing that Monica will love him only if he becomes a real male child, David sets off to muster the Blue Fairy (from the fairy tale Pinocchio), whom he earnestly believes is the only one with the power to grant him his wish. ExplanationArtificial Intelligence is very exchangeable to Mary Shellys Frankenstein in that the underlying themes, questions asked, and moral issues ra ised are the same. The main idea being appropriated is that of creating life, although not life in its usual consideration referring to living organisms. The life created (or rather built) in AI is in fact a mere imitation of life, a mechanical substitute human boyartificial intelligence. In AI, the creation is David, and he bears immediate similarities to the Frankenstein monster. In the book, the monster was to be Frankensteins perfecthuman, a soul who knew nothing but love. Ironically, David was programmed to provide unconditional love and also served the purpose of being the perfect replacement of a human boy.The desire to aid mankind through scientific and proficient advancement is shared by twain creators in their respective texts. In the film however, the Frankenstein equivalent is indirectly achieved by another character after Davids initial creation. The Frankenstein role is in fact fulfilled by Monica, Davids adopter (mother), who activates David by imprinting him to he r. Although for different reasons, both parents (mother/father figures) hurriedly rush the activation process without closely assessing the risks and responsibilities of their doings or even realizing the wishes of their creations. Both creators end up abandoning their creations, leaving them alone, friendless in societies where they are both hunted.A woman talking to the Professor in the first scene of the film asks directly if a robot child loves his mother, is she expected to love him butt?-Can a robot be loved? The film maintains the same stance as Mary Shelleys book by arguing that golf-club is in fact to blame for the mistreatment of David.

Relationship between Science and Religion Essay
The article Relationship amid Science and Religion outlined the different familys that the said devil domains have had over the years. Historically, faith and knowledge were viewed as starkly separate palm that could not be unified. This view is more popularly known as the conflict thesis . On the other hand, Stephen Jay Gould (1999, quoted in Wikipedia 2007) stated that the 2 fields could co-exist peacefully if they do not intervene with each others business. The article also enumerated different kinds of fundamental interactions between the two as presented by Polkinghorne (1998, quoted in Wikipedia 2007). Aside from the constant opposing views regarding the natural world or reality, Polkinghorne illustrated that religion and science may reach a common ground or may even be united with regard to a particular occurrence. afterward this, the article then went on discussing the early efforts of some religious groups to complement their doctrines with scientific facts. But of c ourse, thither were groups, particularly Islam that resisted the proliferation of science in what they believe as sectarian-dominated world. Inevitably, with the advancement of science and fast modernization of societies, there were new groups formed embodying beliefs apart from the fundamentalist view of religion. These groups range from the liberal Enlightenment advocates to non-fundamentalist sects such as Protestant Christian. There were even organizations formed that atomic number 18 not religiously affiliated but perform functions congruent to what religion usually does.Though there were new groups organized, some religion, which date back to ancient times claim that their dogma is capable in adjusting with scientific advancement and this has been actually used by them to explain their own theories toward the strengthening of their own beliefs. The last parts of the article list the varied point of views of scientists toward religion. Some view that religion and science are d istinct from each other while others believe that the two could be unified.Others simply believe that the two fields share the same objectives in nerve-racking to provide explanation of the happenings in the environment they live in. And also, since religious beliefs are part of cosmos, they can be scientifically tested. Lastly, the article presented studies and findings on relevant issues creation tackled. Since the article is not argumentative in nature, it is difficult to determine fallacious statements. The article did not clearly propose or suggest eachthing nor did it draw any conclusion. It was presented in a seemingly objective manner. I used the words seemingly objective because if one read the paper, it would be observed that the relationship between religion and science were clearly outlined without favoring any of the items. However, as one analyzed the pattern on how the article was written, the biases would be realized. The article enumerated four kinds of interactio n between religion and science. However, as the article progresses, only the CONFLICT and INDEPENDENCE kinds of interaction were substantiated. The paper presented early efforts and manifestations of well-established, if not ancient, religious denominations to reconcile the two fields but it failed to elaborate on this matter. The article could have cited instances, findings or any on-going research wherein the two subject matters were integrated. Instead, the article highlighted some points in history when scientific advancements were sanctioned by religious authorities. Moreover, as if strengthening the idea that religion and science are irreconcilable, the article pointed out the formation of non-religious organizations.Though the article presented the non-fundamentalist relationship views, it fell short in showing that the sectarian side is attempting to make a world where they are both accommodated. For example, aside from hinting the non-sectarian groups, it could have also st ated some religious institutions that support scientific and technological development. The second bias that allude to the favoring of the separation of the two domains are the surveys showing that a higher helping of scientists do not believe in any religious systems. How about presenting data on spiritual leaders who also uphold basic principles of science?Lastly, towards the end of the article, it showed findings on the correlation between religiosity and intelligence. Though this study didnt categorically stated that those who observe holy practices and those who are strict believers of religious doctrines have low serotonin levels, it seems to create the stigma. If this line of thinking were continuously propagated, many would be discouraged to associate themselves with any religious beliefs. every last(predicate) the biases lean towards the implication that efforts to settle the differences between religion and science should be abandoned. This is what makes the article probl ematic. At first, the writing tried to present the relationship between the two in an objective way. But it failed because biases were evident. If the author had really wanted his output to be presented objectively, he should have shown the two sides of the coin. For example, he asserted the aggressive progress of science but mentioned only historic accounts on the side of religion. Also, he cited a list of studies disputing the validity of religious co-existence with science, but he again failed to mention the side of religion. Is religion also trying to draw a clear line against science or is it accepting the recent wonders of the latter? Since the author failed to be impartial in writing the article, he should have instead taken a clear-cut position on the issue so readers would be channelise in the direction hes driving at. Our meat must be Halal and no pork is to be consumed on the premises. Our service users are able to eat what they indispensableness outside of Gofal and whilst out on day services. Working a 24/7 rota can sometimes have an impact on those who have phantasmal beliefs for example. Depending on the service user we are supporting it may be a case of someone with a religious belief that may work well and build an excellent rapport with t he service user. For example we have a female Muslim member of staff who works excellent with a Muslim service user where as he may not work as well with myself.Appraisals and supervisions play a major role as they reflect on areas of improvement as you may have concerns regarding your support or the support that you are giving the service users. For example the ratio of females/males, age, religious beliefs, drivers and medication trained.

I advised the employee the format of the meeting, I explained that it would be a opportunity to give his view on how he felt his development was going. To discuss any strengths and also discuss force fields where development may be needed. We first discussed the menstruum personal development plan that was in place and ask the employee there current view of how they feel they are performing and where they are at with targets to date. What feedbac k did I get?The employee gave me some great feedback. They advised the format of the meeting and being informal made the employee feel comfortable and at ease. The employee like that we reviewed the current personal development plan and was happy to have areas of improvement to allow to employee to set goals. It was clear that I was familiar with the objectives and had reviewed these before we started discussing them. It was also advised that I was relaxed which helped the employee feel relaxed. How would I rate my performance?I think I did quite well, as this isnt something I have a lot of bring forth in so I feel that there are areas I can improve on in future. I felt that I did real well at listening to what the employee was saying and linking that to another dissonant question to get the employee talking and the review flowing. I also feel that my friendly and relaxed address came across as very sincere and helped the employee speak honestly. What have I learnt? I think I ha ve learnt how to make and employee feel comfortable in a review and also I have learnt what type of questions may be asked.I now also feel I have the skills to help boost the employee to talk rather than you doing all the talking, and you have to be able to develop goals and objectives that are appropriate and relevant for the individual. By asking the right questions and persisting with open questions, they do eventually start to talk. How get out I use what I have learnt? I think the skills I have learnt will prove utile not only when conducting appraisals, but in other situations such as interviews and disciplinaries. Both of these situations require the use of good questioning and listening skills and I think that I will be much more confident in my ability to engage employees in open conversation in the future. I think it will also encourage me to take more of an interest into all employees development and will now push for reviews to be on a more fastness basis. I think thi s will help to boost employee morale, as well as improve communication between line managers and their staff. Ultimately my goal in life is to become an English teacher so that I can pass on knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. Returning to do a s as yetth year has provided me with a chance to puff on my current qualifications and enhance my understanding of literature through Philosophy and my Advanced Higher English course. A firm gr asp of diachronic events from my previous History course has assisted me in my English course as it is entrally focused on independent study.Researching the hindquartersground of authors and the period that which they were in, has helped me distinguish my depth psychology of the literature alongside preparing me for the academic world of university. One of my first duties within school is that of the role of prefect. I have done this duty for two historic period now and it involves maintaining order within the corridors. I have also been appointed an Independent Studies Supervisor. This requires me to take a leadership role and motivate others to complete their solve while assisting them in areas that I ave studied. It is a very rewarding experience to be able to teach students in some aspects hence I am within my complete element in this situation. In my spare time I enjoy writing poems or stories reflecting my outlook on life, or even my observation of others endeavours. From a personal point of view this allows me to expand on themes that have real meaning to me and understand why others apply those themes within novels, plays and poems. at the same time writing about others allows me to see the development of real life characters, break down their actions and analyse he thoughts that they are feeling and empathise with them.Furthermore for the live on eightsome years I have been in this group known as Musical Youth. We put on productions of popular well known shows. However for the last two years I have progressed to the adult group known as Encore. This involves writing our own plays contemporary, Victorian or otherwise again allowing me to expand upon the mentality of characters and well thought themes. In my English course this has helped me understand the real root of what each writer is trying to say. Because of this I would certainly founder ocieties such as drama and even sports such as rugby.Between all the drama, I like to spend a little ti me and give back to the community. I head to the Day Care Centre each week and help the elderly while keeping them company. Some of the stories they have to tell are magnificent, and has given me insight to a basis of real live events in the past, which I apply currently in my English course. Leverage and leveraged finance
Leveraged finance commonly means funding a company with more debt than it is worth. Leveraged finance is used to gain specific, short term objectives comparable acquiring a company through vitiate outs or buy-ins, or parking funds in assets which generate fast and excessive returns over the personify of funding. The Sub Prime crisis of recent times makes it important to keep the above definition in mind. Implicit in all finance deals is the down-side or insecurity that a lot of value (m bingley in plain terms) would simply disappear if the wrong calculations ar made. In finance a lot of calculated thought is based around the aptitude of an entity to service or repay its loans. This also raises the question of faith on the organizations capacity to perform and accordinglyce repay its debts along with associated courts, chiefly interest related, and returns.Putting a lever to something means firmly positioning it to perform a task. In the language of finance, supplement wo uld mean to strengthen the power of a companys funds to attract more returns by borrowing yet more funds usually short term. Leveraged financing is the issue of high yielding bonds or funds borrowed from banks to fund the takeover of companies or buy outs by existing members (buy in) or an immaterial stakeholder (takeover). The ratio of the companys debts (borrowings) and the companys return on equity (money borrowed and invested elsewhere) decides the risk rating of a borrowing entity. Simply put, the company has to slang enough to repay the cost of its borrowings and make an passing high profit for its stakeholders. If the cash flow from the operation is negatively affected by the high cost of debt servicing or interest for borrowed funds the position of the lender is riskier. Therefore the interest or the risk cost will be high. (Fletcher, 288-92)The principle is utilized in investing in stocks. The price of a stock is a reflection of its debt to equity ratio at its market or book value. financial leveraging calculates the varying effects of one or the other in arriving at a ratio. It allows higher return to the investor. The loss may be higher too, for the company has to pay servicing costs for borrowings even if its stock is completely eroded. There are levels of leverage financing either secured bank loans or bonds or comparatively less senior subordinated bonds or loans. A leverage financier has to calculate how the finance is to be raised. If he overestimates a companys capacity pay back the loan, he mightiness lend too much at very low margins. The outcome of this would be that the financier will be unable to sell these loans or bonds. Then again, if a companys value is underestimated, then the transaction results in a huge loss. The objective of leveraged buy outs is to acquire assets without utilizing its own not bad(p).The complying courting studies illustrate the impact at different periods in recent times. The Sub Prime CrisisSub Prime borrowers are those whose debt rating is high risk their ability to pay back their loans is considered weak by banks or financial companies. As compared to prime borrowers like companies who are financed with ease, a sub prime or non prime borrowers credentials are considered poor. This is because they are likely non to repay due to insufficiency of funds. They are then financed at sub prime or higher rates of interest than normal. This makes it profitable for lending institutions. In the USA, the bulk of sub prime borrowers are population who seek to buy mobs. The majority has no stable income or is in employment which does not earn enough.Only some months back, in the USA debt was freely available to those who asked in fact, banks fought among themselves to offer loans to leveraged takeovers and hired the services of agents to ferret out possible borrowers. But now, the markets are talking of credit squeeze. Banks are scrambling to tone up their balance sheets. What led to thi s problem? It is good to remember that householders, commercial banks, brokers and companies all use leverage differently.Homeowners are said to be anti cyclical in their leverage. When assets (in this case, property values) appreciate faster, leverage a factor of debt to equity, decreases. When asset values shrink, leverage rises. This is because householders keep paying mortgages regardless of cycles of increase or decrease in property values or share prices. When a householder takes, say, $300,000 on a $400,000 house, he has equity of $100,000 or a leverage ratio of 3. Supposing the house price was to increases to $500,000, his equity doubles to $200,000 toning down the leverage ratio to 15 (Kar, 165-71)Banks and companies are neither strongly anti nor pro cyclical, choosing fixed leverage ratios whatever happens to the market.Investment banks and broking houses are extremely pro cyclical, ramping up their leverage as asset prices move upward. Brokers employ specialized risk bas ed history which allows increased borrowing while prices are rising. Conversely, they have to borrow less as prices fall. While adjusting to risk is natural, these brokers acted against what would be prudent judgment. To explain this an amateur might think that high priced portfolios run a higher risk. On the other hand, a calm market would make him cautious in anticipation of a storm. The finance professionals turn this judgment on its head through an instrument which they have devised called Value at Risk (VAR) which considers current market values, no amour how unpredictable the market is. For example, in the valuation of complex portfolios, brokers tended to assume only recent history. A short calm period is taken to project future tranquility for more years. So, when a real market risk is present, the ratio of VAR to valuation of assets is low. Companies would consequently be compelled to leverage more when, in fact, they should not have.Till 2007, brokers kept increasing th eir portfolios of householder finance, apparently because there was apparently less risk. Just as the signal would have been to buy when prices were high, the now confound indications, based on wrong models, led to prospects of selling when the housing markets was turbulent. As result, brokers are left with assets of almost $300 meg of hung deals- householders had simply walked away. (King, 68-71)The Long precondition Credit Management Crisis of 1998Another example of the failure of valuation models and the intervention of leveraged funds this crisis had a major impact on global markets.Long shape Capital Management (LTCM), founded in 1994 by John Meriwether, decided to deal in US and other presidential term bonds. The idea was that over time government bonds would be identical in value if released within short gaps of each other. The rate at which these bonds appreciated would be different as in the case of US government bonds which would rise in value faster. The profit would be taken from selling costlier bonds and buying cheaper bonds. The profits did come to such an extent that LTCM had to regard around for areas to invest its capital .It went into risk arbitraging -this was outside their expertise. They had to resort to highly leveraged finance to sustain return on equity. Their equity was almost 5 billion dollars against borrowings of $125 million. The proceeds were also used in investing in equity derivatives. By end August 1997, the company had lost most of its capital due to some downtrends which its managers could not read earlier specially the Great Asian Meltdown of 1997 and still had to pay the huge borrowing costs. Leverage had ordain the company. The Dot Com BubbleThrough the early 90s and till the first years of 2000, information technology was surging forward on extremely encouraging forecasts about its future in the world. Entrepreneurs were able to float technology companies, financed by venture capital which was riding on the prospec ts of fantastic returns. No one realized that these companies had nothing up front to offer which could be valued in rational terms. Huge leverage was sought in order to follow this boom around the world. The bubble was pricked as fast as it had been blown up and companies and capital vanished. (Lamb, 434-38)Works citedFletcher, Robert. Life chances of young people Essay
Describe the social, economic and cultural factors that can excite an impact on the outcomes and life chances of young people.Whether it be family income, social class or racial background, factors like these lots have a long lasting impact on infantrens lives. The economic factors ar, in my opinion, the easiest to describe as the extremes are intimately apparent. GCSE results showed that children whos parents worked tended to do better that those whos parents didnt. Those children who lived below the poverty line tended to do worse again. This is a clear indicator that economic wellbeing has a positive effect on the outcomes of young people.Cultural factors can impact massively on childrens lives. The first example of this that springs to most peoples minds is often when a group is classd against because of their culture. This is well documented throughout history and where it has happened, those children who have been subject to discrimination have generally achieved less at s chool and had fewer life chances. This is non the only example however. In certain cultures thither is a tendency for boys to be offered much opportunities than girls, possibly where the girls will expected to take on the role of housewife. This is the case in certain religious sects and cultural backgrounds. For me, social inequality is the broadest factor that can impact upon children. The class system may still be used on occasion to differentiate and discriminate , whether by other children or authorities keen to place children in a certain category. The more common factors though are things like push around and gender discrimination. Bullying is a traumatic experience that will often affect a child for umpteen years, sometimes into adulthood. Children who have been bullied will often be less confident and can oftenexperience difficulty at school. Gender discrimination can sometimes lead to bullying only is also evident elsewhere in the UK. Men still tend to earn more than women and still occupy a great many more CEO roles in this country. There are far more male Mps and a smaller percentage of women again in the cabinet.Explain the grandness and impact of poverty on the outcomes and life chances of young people.University entrance results show that far fewer children who have grown up in poverty are entering higher education. This is a clear indicator that poverty has a negative effect on a childs education. This can be for a number of reasons. Simply owning a car allows parents a wider choice of schools for their children to attend. Another example is whether or not the child has a workspace in prescribe to complete homework or projects for school. Children living in poverty often live in a small house where each room is overlap between several people. The more serious cases however are when children are discriminated against because of their families wealth.More often than not the first indicator of poverty will be a childs appearance. Those chi ldren who live in poverty have a higher tendency towards poor hygiene and scruffier clothes, as their families may not own a washing machine or in more extreme cases, have any hot water. This can lead to some professionals categorising these children as underachievers, whilst their peers may pick on them which may lead to bullying.Children who live in poverty are seldom offered the luxury of things like holidays. This is especially true of holidays abroad. I once taught in a school in Bradford where none of the children, aged 8- 9, had left the city. This means they have never experienced other cultures or places and may be less likely to in later life. When those children become adults this means they are less likely to grow a geographical move in order to help them out of poverty. Examples of this are rife in south Wales where there are no longer any jobs in towns such as Merthyr Tydfil. Unemployment figures have continued to rise whilst young adults are finishing school and rema ining intheir home town.Describe the impact of children and young peoples experiences on the outcomes and life chances of young people.Oscar Wild said that variety is the spice of life. Too an extent I believe this to be true. Those children who are offered many rich and varied experiences are often more open minded when it comes to trying something new. However, the way in which childrens life chances can be most keenly affected is through a traumatic experience. Children who suffer bereavement or abuse often have issues socially and may struggle to make friends. Children who are bullied by peers, teachers or family often build a negative association with that aspect of their life and will turn down chances such as further education or families of their own. The flip side of course is if excellent care is given then children will most likely flourish and bear their opportunities. The role of the Early Years professional is to provide positive experiences for children, whilst identi fying negative ones and offering support, not just to the child, but to the family as a whole. Through this the child will build in confidence and learning and will be better prepared for, and more likely to seize the opportunities that life provides.

Analysis of Arguments for and Against the Institutions
The Bretton Woods twins, namely the International Monetary Fund and the International jargon for reconstructive memory and ontogenesis, give been the focus of attention for several years already since its inception. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development has been changed to its presently popular name of World Bank. It is the aim of this paper to make a general launching and evaluation of the rail line posed for and against the Bretton Woods institutions in relation to their influence on the sovereign purpose making process of the different countries in the global economic arena.During its creation, the IMF and the World Bank has been absorbed with practices of liberal economy policies that sought to liberalize the market from the state and minimize government intervention in the premise that the state itself was conceived as the problem rather than the solution (Onis and Senses 2005 264). It has been clearly pointed out by Onis and Senses (2005) that the eff ects of rigid adherence to the neoliberal practices proposed by the Bretton Woods institutions hold up led to problems for a lot of countries.Among them is Argentina who has move suddenly at the peak of its swing (Onis and Senses 2005). This was followed by a shift of the Bretton Woods institutions to rethinking the neoliberal practices they withstand imposed as a tight rope to the countries they have bestowed with different programmes. However, it is still stained with incredulity as to whether their sincerity is real or not in the light of their actions (Onis and Senses 2005 280).The arguments posed by the authors, Onis and Senses (2005), have been followed by concrete examples from countries that have adopted the neoliberal approaches hailed to be good by the Bretton Woods institutions barely did not directly provide as to how and why there were failures on the part of the Bretton Woods institutions than what Stiglitz (2003) had done. some other counter-argument thrown tow ards the IMF, in particular, is its failure in the East Asian Crisis. It has not adhered to the objectives originally formulated by Keynes when it had begun, which was to adopt policies that are expansionary in nature and to provide for funding to developmental undertakings (Stiglitz, 2003). In feature, they have provided for policies that have been contractionary fiscal policies that either involved reducing public spending, increase in taxes, or adopting both. With regard to objectives, this argument stated by Stiglitz is valid for it has stated the whys of the failure of IMF with regard to objectives. The author also provided the answer to the mind how by stating that the IMF has been accountable to a single stream of representatives, who are in turn becoming less(prenominal) and less accountable (Stiglitz 2003 119). A good argument placed upon the World Bank has something to do with the fact that it has been able to learn from the mistakes of the IMF and was able to discuss the problems that have beset their organization (Stiglitz 2003). The World Bank, unlike the IMF, was accountable to a lot of sectors and, with its leaders, was able to discuss the problems and criticisms that have been pushed their way (Stiglitz 2003).This approach by the World Bank was better than the actions of the IMF, who actually blamed the governments for poor implementation. However, with regard to the aids give by the Bank to the developing countries, there are certain conditions such as policies that would pave the way for the success of the aid given (Stiglitz 2003 124). Thus, this has rendered the aid more selective. These are among the several arguments placed and there is more coming from the different handle in the academe. These criticisms only show that the institutions formed Bretton Woods left some more room for improvement. In sum to this, these arguments have shown that the courses of action taken by these institutions had impacts that are felt by both the develop ing and the unquestionable countries. Upon execution of instrument of the marketing plan, the Coca-Cola Company will regain increased market shares and claim its targeted situational position of market leader in the functional drinks segment as well as keeping its long-standing consumer recognition for innovative and successful product launches in diversified markets.Projected profits will be $243,029. 47 (see financial projections). market Plan Part 2 Mar keting Strategy pic The objectives of the marketing plan are strategically centered around 3 criteria to create a strong consumer cognisance towards a completely new bubble tea product from Coca-Cola, to establish a wide brand recognition through the capture of market shares in the functional drinks segment, and to become the top market leader in that particular segment within the forecasted sales figures. pic PRODUCT STRATEGY The core o Bubble Tea beverage in a pre-bottled, ready-to-drink format. The actual product o Packaging and labeling see figure below o Branding colorful, aspect of play, round shaped, prominent Bubble Buzz logo written in modern font, catchphrases such as Think outside the Bubble and Get Your Buzz. o Trade form Bubble Buzz, a Coca-Cola product o Brand personality energy, funky, cool, functional, original, funny, healthy, etc. o Brand equity Coca-Cola provides a quality, consistent, innovative and accessible soft drink reputation. Bubble Tea will now become a widely available drink in multiple retailing (distribution) channels. pic PRICE STRATEGY The price strategy t hat will be undertaken should consider the following aspects 1. Consumer demand 2. The product lifecycle 3. Potential substitutes Customer demand.Customer demand is a crucial factor which is impelled by tastes, income and availability of others similar products at a different price (mentioned later in the potential substitutes section). For a lot of consumers, value and price are highly related the higher the price, the higher the value. Consequently, Coca-Colas intention to position Bubble Buzz as a unique, innovative and attractive product gives it a certain(p) control over Bubble Buzz price. To be able to implement higher pricing though, the minimization of the non-monetary costs to customers should also be include along with awareness of the product (notably by advertising) and value (benefits) . The product lifecycle. The company should take advantage also to the fact that the newer the product and the earlier in its lifecycle the higher the price can usually be. It ensures a h igh profit margin as the early adopters buy the product and the firm seeks to recoup development costs quickly and it also brings a certain prestige to the product. Potential substitutes Coca-Cola is constrained by the monopolistic market in which it competes. The main characteristic however is product differentiation. Other constraints (See Appendix M) PROMOTION STRATEGY Objectives To initiate strong awareness about the launch of Bubble Buzz throughout Generation Y (10-29 years old) consumers as well as their parents. Marketers can still communicate with Generation Y by using a variety of targeted promotional tools. Another important tactic to reach our target market is through Viral or Buzz marketing, which Coca-Cola will to a great extent use in this campaign (campus, contests). Reasons 1. With a total race of 1,313,015,000 in the end of 2005 and 327,714,000 in our target market (age 10 to 25 years old), compared with the total population of Canada304,453 million, there definitely is a great potential worth to work on. 2. absolute expenditure on food an d non-alcoholic beverages is expected to increase from 1,777 billion in 2005 to 2,154 billion in 2010 (though the proportion of consumer expenditure on this part is decreasing from 28. 39% to 25. 75% ) 3.Soft drinks industry is one of the fast growing industries in China, especially fruit/vegetable juice, RTD tea, and Asian speciality drinks and bottled water have shown a sharp increase during 1998 to 2003. 4. Bubble tea was originated in Taiwan. Soon after its introduction in China, it became one of the most popular beverages sold in tea stores on the streets due to the similar taste and similar cultural background. So, it is a good chance for us to enter into this market. 5. Since we are the top sponsor for the upcoming Beijing Olympic in 2008. With more opportunities to expose to the public, it is going to benefit our sale there. Our entry-strategy for entering China is through licensing.Reasons 1. We have already provided licenses for manufacturing our products in China (licensi ng the bottlers and supply them with our syrup required for producing). Therefore, added in one or two more products in our production chain would not be that difficult. 2. It is relatively low risk when compared with direct investment there. It is low cost to export our new products there since we can maintain lower work cost and lower material cost if we produce our products locally, especially in China. Changes to be made 1. terms Price sold in China is going to change to accommodate the local desire. As we set our price sold in Canada $2. 00.Compared to the price sold in the bubble tea store ($ 3. 50), it is about 57. 14%. So, with the information we gathered from the tea store in China2, the price sold there would be 57. 14% of what sold in the tea store$12 Yuen in China currency. Then, it would be around $7 Yuen, about CAD$13. 2. Naming the product In order to be recognized and accredited more easily for the local market, we need not only translate our product name but also make sure theres not hidden unintended meaning that would price our product. 3. Develop other flavours that would attract the local market Since milk based bubble tea sell better in China, we will add in this product line. Also, we will avoid using too many artificial colors as they are not appreciated as much as in Canada. Moreover, people in China are becoming more and more health concerned, especially the amount of sugar and additives added in the drinks. We will make some changes in the ingredients used to appeal the local market, i. e. less sugary drinks. 4. Promotion In contrast to the radio ads in Canada, we will use more TV and Web advertisement there due to the highly exposed environment in China. Also, we will put more emphasis on the ads on the public transportation such as tubing/subway system and bus service due to the more frequent use of the public transport service there. Also, since the outdoor display screen is quite popular in big cities, we will also take advant age of it. pic pic APPENDIX A (ref. 2) pic APPENDIX B (ref. 4) pic APPENDIX C (ref. 1 & 8) STRENGHTS Brand strength (see Appendix F for brand rankings) The Coca-Cola Company is the largest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of nonalcoholic beverage concentrates and syrups in the world. The Coca-Cola brand is unarguably one of the most recognizable brands in the 200 countries where it sells its products. The strong brand name is one of the basis for the companys competitive advantage on several of its core markets. Effective strides in new markets.Coca-Cola has partnered with several companies (such as the joint venture with Nestle) in order to increase the ability to react to demands and changes in the markets of iced tea, coffee and juices. The developing markets are more complex than the carbonated soft drinks. Results of operations In 2004, net-operating revenues totaled approximately $21. 9 billion, an 8% increase from 2002. Gross profit totaled $14. 3 billion in 2004. The c ompany generated $5,968 million from its operating activities and re-invests heavily into its business. The ability to generate significant notes flows is one of the its key strengths (ref. 16). Strong existing distribution channels Coca-Cola has operations worldwide and is well established in its distribution channels (such as store retailers or vending machines). Therefore, a new product launch can typically rely on the existing distribution system in order to reach the majority of its target market while requiring no major supply / delivery developments. WEAKNESSES Relying upon line extensions Coca-Cola is relying on brand extensions increase sales in specific lines, particularly its long-time carbonated soft drink products (i. e. the introduction of Vanilla Coke helped maintain sales for the core Cola beverages). However, there is a strong risk of cannibalizing existing sales in the long term (for example, Bubble Tea might admonish on sales for iced tea). Reliant upon particula r carbonated drinks The long-time presence of Coca-Colas Coke beverage has established this particular line as a flagship product. While the core Coke products bring a upstanding base of sales and loyalty to the company, consumers expectations also become more and more anchored and single-lined, taking away exemption in the areas of line diversification and product modifications (taste, packaging, price). Brand dilution The tremendous amount of existing brands and new product being introduced by the company could diminish the value and differentiating strength of each product that is being manufactured. Entrance into difficult non-core categories The Coca-Cola Company is a truly global multinational business giant. While some categories of products are distributed in many areas of the globe (Coke, Powerade, etc. ), geographical needs already require that these global brands are heavily adapted to their target region.Furthermore, many smaller and diversified product lines are more or less popular in one particular region over another. Therefore, the process of diversifying the production and marketing each product involves costly investments. These capital requirements typically increase as the product becomes heavily center (for example, since the Coca-Cola brand is highly recognizable worldwide, marketing a bottle of Coke in Japan would be less difficult than marketing a bottle of Qoo in that same country Qoo being a lesser-known non-carbonated drink which was one of Coca-Colas newest brand introduction in 1999). Saturation of carbonated soft drink segmentDue to the countless number of brands available on the market, it becomes increasingly difficult in the soft drinks segment to innovate and create new products that genuinely stand out from their competition. And as we have seen, an analysis of the industry has shown that growth in the soft drinks market becomes difficult and challenging when the conditions and consumer trends cause a market demand that st ays stagnant. OPPORTUNITIES New product introductions The functional drinks market is one that particularly allows more innovation opportunities and gives greater freedom for creativity in the design, production, manufacturing, distribution, promotion and retailing choices and processes. Brand is attractive to global partners.Because of the companys size (including value, brand name and operating revenues) and wide portfolio base, Coca-Cola enjoys a strong purchasing power over its suppliers, and also attracts large partnerships with various levels of consumer reach (e. g. Burger King, movie studio promotions, sponsorship agreements, etc. ). Existing brand awareness also provides an international playing field for powerful marketing strategies. THREATS Strong competition Coca-Cola is competing in a global market that is characterized by an oligopoly between several (but few in numbers) competitors. The fight for market shares and sales in crowded markets becomes a complex one. Poten tial health issues. The current trend of consumer and consumers groups awareness towards goods and services is both beneficial and threatening for companies in the food and beverages industry. Over the last few years, concerns over health issues have risen in the media through an expanded and ever-growing network of knowledge outputs (journals, TV channels, net and so on). The move of the younger generation towards a healthier lifestyle call for careful training and decision-making in new product developments. Large companies can also easily become the target of consumers apprehension.

Overpopulation and Water shortage Essay
Increased living expectancies as a result of advances in science atomic number 18 causing over race. In the west immigration and increased life expectancies argon causing over cosmos. This directly translates to non-homogeneous economic and social problems for each the residents in an area c eitherable to the increased strain in resources. While there is increased need for early(a) countries to adapt improve policies that willing improve the living conditions for its residents and curb the need to immigrate, nations let to address the issues that are resulting from overuniverse. These issues arising from over people include starvation referable to increased population, reduced food supplies and increased prices of food. In improver there is an change magnitude risk of infection of pee shortages in the world due to overexploitation of urine resources. The issue of body of pissing shortages too arises from the changing global climatic patterns which tolerate resorted from global warming as a result of climate hostile practices such as deforestation from increased need for land to settle on and increased tune pollution due to increased number of industries and emissions.Systems such as healthcare have also not been spared from strain due to overpopulation and people are receiving lower quality medical care resulting to to a greater extent deaths. environmental degradation and overexploitation of available natural resources is a result of overpopulation. Populations are polluting the environment more(prenominal) by in streamlined waste disposal mechanisms and increased air and wet pollution. Overpopulation results to overcrowding and increased takes of unemployment which has led to increased poverty, more injustices, violence, hunger and an increase in spreading diseases.Human bes like totally other species depend on natural ecosystems self regulating processes for provide of basic life support processes such as the subtlety of air, deco mposition of waste, climate regulation and the supply of body of weewee supply. Water is a natural renewable resource that will automatically self renew. However this is when all other natural processes are held constant. An increase in the population of people living in an area to an amount that will bring a strain to all natural resources is called overpopulation. The integrity of all these ecosystems is compromised by the strain and as a result there is either in ample water system supply or a compromise in the quality of water (Zuckerman & Jefferson, 56) there is a world wide crisis over water. According to the recent report by the unite Nations, the problems arising from water shortages cannot be ignored. much than thirty one countries are currently facing dire water shortages. More than a billion of the worlds population is facing water scar urban center or is lack access to clean water for drinking. The reports published by World Bank predict that by 2025, more than two thirds of the world population will have insufficient water (Cooper, 16). The amount of water being consumed is on an upward global trend and is doubling every two decades due to the increasing populations and needs. At the same time, the available water resources are under the constant threat of pollution, depletion and overexploitation in a bid to meet the rising needs.Countries and municipal systems have proved inefficient in the provision of sufficient and gum elastic water to the constantly increasing population. In addition the most decisive aspect to this quandary is the strain the over population is placing on the existing water resources. Illinois is the fifth largest state in the United States with a population of more than 12. 4 million people. More immigrants are moving to Illinois and experts predict a slow but rapid increase in the state in the future.Illinois has always been thought to have ample water supply. The fact that Lake Michigan has constantly supplied Ill inois with water has always given residents security in water supply. Researchers have raised concern over this current trend of affairs and have predicted that in the next fifteen years Illinois will be facing possible water shortage crisis. Cities in the south like Chicago and Bloomington occasiond cooperative agreement with the surrounding California states to limit their water consumption. In the Chicago area, similar to other parts of the continent, awareness on the looming water crisis as experienced by other states in the south has resulted in local and state officials implementing measures that will allow preservation of the fresh water supplies and check out that water is more efficiently used by the residents (Zuckerman & Jefferson, 64). Illinois as a state has realized the importance of addressing impending water crisis before they become a reality. The solution to the looming water shortages in Illinois were first geared towards increasing the number of water supplies i n the state by withdraw more heads and aquifers. There was an outcry by environmental preservationists and as all the stakeholders began to realize that this uprise would not last them long, they initiated a better strategy into the 21st century. This approach is on better wariness of the already established supplies. To this ideal, numerous water preservation programs have been established at the regional level that are geared towards the application of better water saving approaches at the individual level. In addition they advocate for residents to use water efficient appliances as well as fixtures. The battle over water resources at the Southern states has created awareness among all the US states and the politicians and policy makers have geared their efforts towards addressing the threat of water shortages. Illinois is one of the eight states of United Sates of America which approved the Great Lakes Compact. This is an initiative by the southern states to treasure the five great lakes by restricting and regulating access to them thereby ensuring a constant safe supply of water for those Southern Sates in the future. There is a rapid ripening in all the towns in Illinois and due to this the demand for water has increased. This has translated to higher water consumption and Illinois is approaching the maximum allot limit from Lake Michigan. These limits have been in use since 1985 after being decreed by the Supreme court of law in 1967. Researches have been analyzing the possibility of utilizing alternative water supplies such as Aquifers for meeting the growing water demands. They discovered that the aquifers would only sustain water use up to 2030 if the populations consumption re primary(prenominal)ed stable. Under the growing population strain and the corresponding rising need for more water that would not be enough for sustaining the population (Cooper, 20). Sufficient fresh water which is of good quality is vital for any state to sustain the vari ous people and animals living there. Water is a basic need used for drinking and bathing, irrigation, sustaining fisheries and other crucial services in a state (Shah, 90).There is a global change in the climatic conditions and this has led to the eventual and rapid disappearance of critical ecosystems not only in Bloomington but also in other cities all over the world threatening the continuous supply of water for their increasing populations. The situation at hand in Bloomington is that which is being faced by all the other cities all over the United States. Bloomington city is located in the center of Illinois southwest of Chicago. It is the largest county in Illinois with a population of more than 64. 8 million.Bloomington is the fastest growing city in Illinois and recorded a population growth of more than 20%. There is an increased trend over the last few years due to increased immigration. The city council of Bloomington is working towards the expansion of the Monroe WTPs cap acity. They are attempting to address this issue by using tissue layer filtration to bring the additional flow to provide population with sufficient water. Bloomington is major city in Illinois. The main source of drinking water for Bloomington city is Monroe Reservoir. Lake Griffy and Lake Lemon supplement the water supply. In Bloomington, the main regional water conservation body is campaigning for addressing both quality and quantity water issues for Bloomingtons chop-chop growing population. Among the recommended strategies they have given to improve the quality of water they are advocating for planting green ceilings and eliminating the use of chemical fertilizers. This is because the chemical residues are eventually drained off to the lakes and the water reservoirs. In addition residents are dissuaded from over exploiting fossil fuels and instead using alternative energy (Shah, 102).To address the issue of water shortages the city has focused on implementing measures that wil l reduce water use for the growing population. They have recommended and are facilitating the implementation of better strategies which will lead the way towards the achievement of a self sustainable biosphere in the arc of the increasing population. These include the installation of low flow shower heads, introduction of machines that maximize washing loads, ensuring roof run off is not wasted and is instead used for irrigation and landscaping with native plants that are water efficient.Experts have also advocated for the installation of ultra flow sanitary units, better washing machines and more water efficient sprinkler systems (Shah, 86). The increase in the human population is inevitable and the state and city policy makers have had to address the issue of the increasing strain in natural resources including water. For this approach to be successful, Bloomington like other cities needs to engage a more cyclical approach which will be more efficient and cost effective to batt en down long term future sustainability of water resources for its growing population.Bloomington seems to be winning initiative towards implementing this poseur by an increase in recycling strategies, decreasing the water consumption and deadly releases to the water sources and air. The Bloomington city government seems to have acknowledged the need to do more in take to establishing initiatives that are addressing the impending overpopulation crisis. To this regard, they have established a commission on sustainability that addresses issues regarding the establishment of policies geared towards conservation of the already available resources. The mayor signed the climate protection agreement and implemented city council resolutions which are Kyoto protocol friendly. These have worked towards reducing the soaring green gas emissions which are targeted towards stabilizing global climatic conditions (Zuckerman & Jefferson, 76). The town needs to increase the Norths supply by incorp orating Lake Lemon and Lake Griffy as well as the Bean Blossom Creek. This would only be more slightly expensive than the current model and would supply water to a larger region and would serve as a better supply alternative for Lake Monroe.Other sources that would end the impending crisis would include investing in ground water supplies. Aquifers in the north would supplement the water supply but this would require an intensive study and analysis to ensure that they are a safe alternative for sully of water for consumption. Both of these approaches would ensure reliability in supply but in the light of the growing populations there is need to do more to ensure that these supplies will be consistent and will supply water for the populations. More crucial to implementing any conservation approach is the need to create water awareness campaigns for the residents. There is need to translate the soaring water costs and the reasons behind it so that communities can actively participate in implementing the recommended approaches.REFERENCES Ben Zuckerman & David Jefferson, Human Population and the environmental Crisis, New York Jones & Bartlett Publishers, 1996, 18-78.
